TYPE DESIGN

Reklam, Swedish for advertisement, was a self-commissioned typeface for an exhibition held in the Helsinki city hall. The exhibition was about 1950’s illustrated co-op advertising, and the posters had some really great hand lettering, so I didn’t need to go far searching for ideas. There was a wide variety of contrasted sans serifs, and I was immediately fascinated by the seemingly awkward style. It is also a genre that hasn’t been explored much.
Rather than making a retro hand-lettered fun font, I wanted to have a clean, modern typeface with just some of the quirkiness of the originals. I think I will delve into this
a bit more, Reklam could easily be a large family.
